In Forsyth County, community really does come together. With funding from the United Way of Forsyth County and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the Mentor Me Summer enrichment camps were a true reflection of what life in Forsyth County is like.
This year, 38 children benefitted from the camps, offered in two week-long sessions. Campers went on field trips, had guest “teachers” from other community partners, including the Forsyth County Public Library and Keep Forsyth County Beautiful.
The Place of Forsyth provided classroom space and transportation, and coordinated their sponsors and supporters to provide all the food for both weeks. They had families, businesses and partners from the faith community serve lunch and spend time with the campers every day for two weeks.
To make sure each child had the help needed with the academic component of the camps, more than 35 volunteers worked as camp counselors in shifts throughout the day. They also helped facilitate games, read to the kids and helped supervise when working on crafts and going on field trips. Camp counselors from local high schools, the Chinmaya Mission, The Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit and DaVita Dialysis stepped up to staff the camps.
Stars and Strikes generously donated an afternoon of bowling and arcade games for each week.
Many life long memories were made this summer!
